Book cover of A Walk in the Park: The True Story of a Spectacular Misadventure in the Grand Canyon

Merri Melde ❤️ loved this book because...

Fedarko hits another home run (following his The Emerald Mile) with his recap of his months of walking the Grand Canyon from east to west - sans trails, something only a handful of people have ever yet completed. He and his photographer friend Pete started out as a couple of rubes (and almost died a couple of times) until they hooked up with some veteran GC hikers with the knowledge needed to survive the austere and very often dangerous conditions in the backcountry. Throughout, they discover the beauty and secrets and history of this incredible place, meeting Native Americans, ranchers, and wildlife, witnessing the changes that have already happened and are affecting the park now.

I’m so grateful Fedarko and friends tackled this monumental outdoor adventure, because I’d love to do it but it’s beyond my skill level! And one day in the not-too-distant future, it won’t even be an option for anybody.

Why should I read it?

7 authors picked A Walk in the Park as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Two friends, zero preparation, one dream. From the author of the beloved bestseller The Emerald Mile, a rollicking and poignant account of the epic misadventure of a 750-mile odyssey, on foot, through the heart of America's most magnificent national park and the grandest wilderness on earth.

A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his best friend, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand…

Book cover of Of Time And Turtles

Merri Melde ❤️ loved this book because...

It’s another amazing book from Sy Montgomery (read Soul of an Octopus). Most of us like turtles, but after reading this book you’ll never look at a turtle the same way again, and you’ll love them.

As always, Montgomery deep dives into her subject, this time the world of turtles - some of which can live to more than a hundred years: the underworld of poached and smuggled turtles, how turtles can miraculously heal when helped, how some people devote their lives to saving and doctoring and rehabbing and re-releasing turtles.

And after you finish the book, if you’re like me, you’ll look up the long-lived snapping turtle Fire Chief to see where he ended up.

1 author picked Of Time And Turtles as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

From National Book Award finalist for The Soul of an Octopus and New York Times bestseller Sy Montgomery comes an ode to one of the most diverse, fascinating, and beloved species on the planet: turtles. With elegance, journalistic curiosity, and gorgeous artwork, this nonfiction investigation speaks to the wonder and wisdom of our long-lived cohabitants, who reveal to us astonishing new perspectives on time and healing.

When acclaimed naturalist Sy Montgomery and wildlife artist Matt Patterson arrive at Turtle Rescue League, they are greeted by hundreds of turtles recovering from injury and illness. Endangered by cars and highways, pollution and…

Book cover of Arctic Traverse: A Thousand-Mile Summer of Trekking the Brooks Range

Merri Melde ❤️ loved this book because...

There’s a reason this book is a National Outdoor Book Award winner.

With a backpack, Engelhard tackles the northern-most least-visited mountain range in Alaska one summer, solo, getting up close and personal with Nature.

Navigation, weather and wildlife (can you say grizzlies, and less scary, caribou, foxes, birds) are the biggest challenges. How *do* you deal with a grizzly mom with two cubs when you’re the only person within hundreds of miles?

His knowledge of the country (he’d been a guide in the area for years) and history and his observations make for a fascinating adventure in a part of the world few of us would make an effort to visit.

What is this book about?

"Alternately profound, funny, and enlightening . . . focused not on the death-defying prowess of the adventurer, but on the wild glory of place." ―Erin McKittrick, author of A Long Trek Home, on American Wild

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Somewhere Else

By Merri Melde ,

Book cover of Somewhere Else

What is my book about?

Merri Melde has spent over two cumulative years of her life traveling, answering to an inexplicable need to see the world, to experience different adventures, cultures, people and places.

Taken from her travel journals, Somewhere Else features some of her backpack travels in
Nepal, where she trekked the Annapurna Circuit; India, where exceptional highs and vexing lows included visiting the most incredible Taj Mahal, riding camels in the Rajasthan desert, and enduring a most entertaining 889-mile second class unreserved train ride from Bombay to Cochin; Zimbabwe, where she survived a day of white-water rafting and a 3-day canoe trip down the Zambezi River among hippos and crocodiles; Scotland, where a leisurely tour through the outer Isles slowed time down; and Northern Ireland, where dodging bombs and ignoring tanks in the streets was a way of life and The Troubles consumed her thoughts.

Told with frankness and humor - and sometimes a lack of it - Somewhere Else gives readers just a glimpse of other beautiful countries, intriguing people, and uncommon adventures in spellbinding places around the planet.
