I currently use this book in the college meditation classes I teach. It’s a beautiful reading of Metta Meditation - the meditation of loving kindness. Hahn eloquently describes how suffering is a normal part of life. Without suffering joy wouldn’t be possible. So when suffering inevitably comes along and the need to come out of its grasp is keenly felt, there are specific Metta practices to transcend anguish. The practices are not vague, but very specific. The objective is to honor and acknowledge the suffering as well as the miracle that is life. Breathe on, Hahn. Breathe on!
The secret to happiness is to acknowledge and transform suffering, not to run away from it. Here, Thich Nhat Hanh offers practices and inspiration transforming suffering and finding true joy.
Thich Nhat Hanh acknowledges that because suffering can feel so bad, we try to run away from it or cover it up by consuming. We find something to eat or turn on the television. But unless we’re able to face our suffering, we can’t be present and available to life, and happiness will continue to elude us.
Nhat Hanh shares how the practices of stopping, mindful breathing, and deep concentration…

It definitely leaves the reader wanting to read more books and to hang out more in libraries too. Each librarian has a life worth living and reading about. In fact, I think this book should be a must-read in an assortment of literary circles and definitely for those studying library sciences. Throughout each chapter it beckons the unique heartfelt realizations of what true love is and how great literature is at its core .

I didn’t know much about Viola Davis before reading this book, but after reading it I started seeking out more of her movies to view. Her life struggles are heart-wrenching and her journey thru them utterly amazing. She reads the book herself on audible so this gave me a stronger sense of engagement with this incredible actress as I listened to her often difficult life journey in her very own voice ; a journey to great success. She intimately describes back stories in her Hollywood rise to fame as well - the truthful insides scoops. Through her reflections and emotive readings I felt like I got to know Viola quite well, like a dear friend. Enjoyable. Inspiring. Never boring. Viva Viola!

'It is startlingly honest and, at times, a jaw-dropping read, charting her rise from poverty and abuse to becoming the first African-American to win the triple crown of an Oscar, Emmy and Tony for acting.' BBC News
