Book cover of All Fours

Sara Roahen ❤️ loved this book because...

For me, July nailed the spirit of the perimenopausal/just-postmenopausal experience. I would be the last person to spend $20K on interior design, but I 100% related to the spirit that moved the main character to do so. I found this book to be an honest and important contribution to modern feminist literature. July says the quiet things out loud. Her narration for the audiobook is distractingly quirky at first, but you get used to it.

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The New York Times bestselling author returns with an irreverently sexy, tender, hilarious and surprising novel about a woman upending her life

“A frank novel about a midlife awakening, which is funnier and more boldly human than you ever quite expect….the bravery of All Fours is nothing short of riveting.”—Vogue

“A novel that presses into that tender bruise about the anxiety of aging, of what it means to have a female body that is aging, and wanting the freedom to live a fuller life…Deeply funny and achingly true.” —LA Times

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Demon Copperhead

Sara Roahen ❤️ loved this book because...

The opioid epidemic isn't a novel topic for me, and neither is addiction. Still, Kingsolver humanized her characters in a way that brought me to a much deeper level of understanding and empathy for the people who suffer with and die from opioid addiction --and their loved ones.

Why should I read it?

118 authors picked Demon Copperhead as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Demon's story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking 'like a little blue prizefighter.' For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise.

In the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, poverty isn't an idea, it's as natural as the grass grows. For a generation growing up in this world, at the heart of the modern opioid crisis, addiction isn't an abstraction, it's neighbours, parents, and friends. 'Family' could mean love, or reluctant foster…

This is a how-to book for independent authors and people looking to add publishing services to their workload. More than any other book in 2024, it changed the way I think about my work and run my business. It helped me get my first self-published book to the finish line.

Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table

By Sara Roahen ,

Book cover of Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table

What is my book about?

A cocktail is more than a segue to dinner when it’s a Sazerac, an anise-laced drink of rye whiskey and bitters indigenous to New Orleans. For Wisconsin native Sara Roahen, a Sazerac is also a fine accompaniment to raw oysters, a looking glass into the cocktail culture of her own family―and one more way to gain a foothold in her beloved adopted city. Roahen’s stories of personal discovery introduce readers to New Orleans’ well-known signatures―gumbo, po-boys, red beans and rice―and its lesser-known gems: the pho of its Vietnamese immigrants, the braciolone of its Sicilians, and the ya-ka-mein of its street culture. By eating and cooking her way through a place as unique and unexpected as its infamous turducken, Roahen finds a home. And then Katrina. With humor, poignancy, and hope, she conjures up a city that reveled in its food traditions before the storm―and in many ways has been saved by them since.A cocktail is more than a segue to dinner when it’s a Sazerac, an anise-laced drink of rye whiskey and bitters indigenous to New Orleans.
