This is a beautifully written book with a cast of characters who, while not totally lovable/likable, fit so deeply into the storyline and their harsh environment that they (and the book) is fabulous. The setting is a small town dying on the Montana plains - and the writing makes you FEEL it.

With the quiet precision of Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres and the technical clarity of Mary Roach's Stiff, this is a novel about a young woman who comes most alive while working in her father's mortuary in a small, forgotten Western town.

fabulous world building and a very creepy plot. I would call this "High Plains Gothic." A movie has been made of this book - the sense of building dread is intense.

Dalton, North Dakota. It's September 1951: years since George and Margaret Blackledge lost their son when he was thrown from a horse; months since his widow left with their only grandson and married another man. Margaret is resolved to find and retrieve her beloved grandson, while George, a retired sheriff, is none too eager to stir up trouble.
Nothing embodies the spirit of the American West more than the horse. Wild horses, trained horses, and those at every stage in between evoke pride and passion while presenting an American image of freedom, strength and swiftness. The WESTERN HORSE celebrates the history and culture of the western horse, its ability to capture the popular imagination, and the means by which it has come to symbolize the American West. The mounted Plains tribes, cavalry, Pony Express, stock detectives, cowboys, horse thieves and iconic rodeos come into perspective.
