I know I'm unfashionably late to the party on this story, but I haven't seen anyone saying exactly this about it: Mexican Gothic makes an incredible amount of sense in its own context. That's rare and fun in a horror story, especially one in the gothic subgenre. NOTHING happens arbitrarily in Mexican Gothic! That makes the whole plot worse/better in the best of ways.
And now, the part you've doubtless already heard about this novel. The characters are engaging and deeply human (yes, even that guy, unfortunately). I especially love that in their own ways, all the characters are a little greedy about something. Greed instigates many entertaining interactions among the characters, and with their deliciously creepy world.
The award-winning author of Gods of Jade and Shadow (one of the 100 best fantasy novels of all time, TIME magazine) returns with a mesmerising feminist Gothic fantasy, in which a glamorous young socialite discovers the haunting secrets of a beautiful old mansion in 1950s Mexico.
He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemi. You have to save me.
When glamorous socialite Noemi Taboada receives a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging to be rescued from a mysterious doom, it's clear something is desperately amiss. Catalina has always had a flair for the dramatic, but…
I don't read many comic books or romances, but I'll be making exceptions for Eunnie's stories from now on! Eunnie writes and draws wonderfully expressive characters who I rooted for from the very first page. Even in our heroine's most miserable moments, the story is drawn in hopeful colors, and when things were going well, my heart soared with hers.
The romance plot itself feels natural and dynamic. Although the perspective is firmly from the introspective protagonist, I really enjoyed the glimpses of the story events from other people's perspective which clearly show that the adorably shy protagonist might be missing important details she'd only find out if she (oh no) talked to someone about her problems!
Also, for my fellow ebook fans: The ebook formatting is stellar. I read it on my phone with no difficulties.
'Super sweet and totally heartwarming!' - Alice Oseman, bestselling author of Heartstopper
Momo Gardner is the kind of friend who's always ready to lend a helping hand. She's introverted, sensitive, and maybe a little too trusting, but she likes to believe the best in people.
PG, on the other hand, is a bit of a lone wolf, despite her reputation for being a flirt and a player. Underneath all that cool mystery, she's actually quick to smile, and when she falls for someone, she falls hard.
An unexpected meet-cute brings the two together, kicking off the beginning of an awkward…
I've never read a horror story like this one! First, our protagonist and viewpoint character is a unique delight, from her close and turbulent relationship with her family to her (well researched, as far as I can tell!) extensive insect knowledge, and even more features you just don't see in the average haunted house protagonist.
And then there are all the extremely strange story events! I enjoyed being surprised at every turn, even in such an otherwise commonplace location as a reasonably sized house in the American suburbs. There's something in this story to scare everyone, even if it's the entirely natural possibility that a parent might be getting seriously ill. But don't worry, there are extremely strange supernatural spooks involved too! I highly recommend it for fans of supernatural horror and complicated family relationships.
A haunting Southern Gothic from an award-winning master of suspense, A House With Good Bones explores the dark, twisted roots lurking just beneath the veneer of a perfect home and family.
"Mom seems off."
Her brother's words echo in Sam Montgomery's ear as she turns onto the quiet North Carolina street where their mother lives alone.

The smart city that secures the world's idyllic way of life is failing, and it's up to a single engineer to find out why.
Engineer Elys Kundakçi has been on the run since the fascist Republic's secret police framed her for a disaster that wasn't her fault. When she's picked up by a squad of armored social workers from an independent planet, she finds herself in a much-needed safe harbor.
The social workers rescued Elys so she can fix the station's smart city infrastructure that decides where people live, runs their economy, and coordinates social services. Her rescuers' leader is patient, compassionate, and distractingly attractive. Elys's friendship — and, she dares to hope, romance — with her grows while Elys works on the station's problems.
As signs point toward nearly undetectable sabotage, Elys must find the programming error and the saboteur behind it before the smart city's mistakes reveal her location to the Republic operatives hunting her, or the Republic takes advantage of the independent planet's disarray to invade, kill Elys, and steal everything her hosts built their beautiful station to achieve.
