Lisa C. Taylor ❤️ loved this book because...

This book is a master class in how to end a book! It was understated and yet perfect. I also loved the genius move of having the enslaved talk in regular, educated language when they were alone but revert to poor English and dialect when they were in the presence of white people. He is a masterful writer.

'Truly extraordinary books are rare, and this is one of them' - Roddy Doyle, Booker Prize-winning author of Paddy Clarke, Ha Ha Ha

James by Percival Everett is a profound and ferociously funny meditation on identity, belonging and the sacrifices we make to protect the ones we love, which reimagines The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Book cover of Shred Sisters

Lisa C. Taylor ❤️ loved this book because...

The contrast between the mentally ill sister and the sometimes enabling sister who lived in the other sister's shadow resonated for me. The beautiful and mentally ill sister took all the oxygen out of every room and doomed every man who fell for her. This is an excellent book about the far-reaching impact of family dysfunction.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Demon Copperhead

Lisa C. Taylor ❤️ loved this book because...

It was breathtakingly original to take the story of David Copperfield to this level. The book was disturbing, chaotic, long, and complicated. I felt as if I suffered along with Demon, the main character. I've never been disappointed with a Barbara Kingsolver book and this book was no exception. Her writing challenges me to reach as a writer.

118 authors picked Demon Copperhead as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Demon's story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking 'like a little blue prizefighter.' For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise.

In the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, poverty isn't an idea, it's as natural as the grass grows. For a generation growing up in this world, at the heart of the modern opioid crisis, addiction isn't an abstraction, it's neighbours, parents, and friends. 'Family' could mean love, or reluctant foster…

The Shape of What Remains

By Lisa C. Taylor ,

Book cover of The Shape of What Remains

What is my book about?

Paralyzed by grief ten years after witnessing the violent death of her six-year-old daughter, English professor, Teresa Calvano turns to Chaucer, a love of Janis Joplin passed on by her absent father, and a monthly book group to cope with her emotionally absent husband and an uncertain future.

Is there a cure for grief? In Teresa Calvano's world, her research on Chaucer, life as a successful tenured English professor, and her relationship with her husband Luke, a Shakespearean scholar and fellow professor fail to offer the one thing Teresa wants: another day with her six-year-old daughter, Serena. Their older son, Wyatt is navigating his freshman year of college and a first love while Teresa struggles to teach just one class a semester, and attend a monthly book group. When Luke is offered an opportunity to spend a sabbatical semester in Oxford, England, Teresa must decide if she can move away from the physical reminders of her daughter, and the tenuous threads that hold her life together.
