The story was powerful and an emotional, visceral read at times but it was amazing. I love Percival Everett's work, but this could be my favorite. I love, love, love the idea of telling The Huck Finn story from James' point of view.
'Truly extraordinary books are rare, and this is one of them' - Roddy Doyle, Booker Prize-winning author of Paddy Clarke, Ha Ha Ha
James by Percival Everett is a profound and ferociously funny meditation on identity, belonging and the sacrifices we make to protect the ones we love, which reimagines The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. From the author of The Trees, shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and Erasure, adapted into the Oscar-winning film American Fiction.

Anthony Doerr is one of my favorite writers. I'm iffy on short story collections, but I picked this one up because Doerr wrote it. Truthfully, I'd bought it a few months before and opened it on my Kindle and because of that thing that happens on Kindle, I didn't immediately know the title of what I was reading. I was about ten pages in before I thought, "I love Anthony Doerr's writing .. and wait. Is this a collection of short stories? And I'm sticking? Yes. I'm sticking." So beautiful. In the luminous and beautiful title story, a young boy in South Africa comes to possess an old woman's secret, a piece of the past with the power to redeem a life. In 'The River Nemunas', a teenaged orphan moves from Kansas to Lithuania to live with her grandfather, and discovers a world in which myth becomes real. 'Village 113' is about the building of the Three…
