❤️ loved this book because...

Franzen captures naturalistic feelings and thought processes, and is unafraid of how much darkness is in the human mind. He portrays that darkness in an appreciative way and makes flawed humans beautiful.

What is this book about?

Jonathan Franzen’s gift for wedding depth and vividness of character with breadth of social vision has never been more dazzlingly evident than in Crossroads.

It’s December 23, 1971, and heavy weather is forecast for Chicago. Russ Hildebrandt, the associate pastor of a liberal suburban church, is on the brink of breaking free of a marriage he finds joyless—unless his wife, Marion, who has her own secret life, beats him to it. Book cover of Bliss Montage: Stories

❤️ loved this book because...

Ma is truly original in her conception of storytelling, mixing the absurd with the quotidian. She really knows how to write an ending, one that prompts the reader to think about what might come after the ending. A collection of stories has lots more endings than a novel!

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Gravity's Rainbow

❤️ loved this book because...

Hard work pays off in this book. I read it three times. I had to! The first pass gave me a sense of the who and where, the second allowed me to understand the story, and the third gave me an appreciation for how it was told.

It shares a lot in plot and themes with Slaughterhouse Five, but one is written at a high school reading level, and the other at a PhD level.
