Book cover of Mark Twain

Jay Parini ❤️ loved this book because...

This ample (1,200 pages) and sumptuous biography has stayed with me. It’s a vivid story, of course, one can’t go wrong with Mark Twain, and I’ve read almost all of the earlier biographies.

This book offers a detailed and brilliant look at one of America’s most iconic authors. I had known about this book for some time before it came out, and I asked to review it. It was a delicious read because I love the subject, although the style of the author is one of extreme efficiency and professionalism.

Chernow is an established biographer, and he knows what he’s doing, and I liked being in the hands of a pro.

But when the Civil War interrupted his career on the river, the young Mark Twain went west and accepted a job at the local newspaper, writing dis patches that attracted attention for their brashness and humour. My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Jackal's Mistress

Jay Parini ❤️ loved this book because...

This book held me in its thrall.

It’s a Civil War novel, brilliantly told, featuring a wounded Union officer and a resilient Southern wife of a Confederate soldier, converged in a moving story of redemption.

I’ve known Bohjalian for many years, as a Vermont neighbor. I’ve read a large number of his books. I pretty much read every book he writes, but this one, because the Union soldier is a Vermonter, I had special interest. I like anything to do with Vermont.

Bohjalian is a master of plot and characterization, and I deeply appreciate his style – he’s gotten better book by book, which is rare in a novelist.

Book cover of What You Have Heard Is True

Jay Parini ❤️ loved this book because...

This sharp-edged, astonishing, and painfully vivid memoir by a fine poet will stick in your brain. It’s about war and the meaning of war in the moral lives of serious people.

Forché is one of my favorite poets, and I’ve kept up with her over the decades. But this was a real surprise, written with wonderfully imagistic prose, a poet’s prose.

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Borges and Me

By Jay Parini ,

Book cover of Borges and Me

What is my book about?

It’s an account of my travels in the Highlands of Scotland with the blind old poet, fiction writer from Chile, Jorge Luis Borges.

The year was 1971, and I was escaping the Vietnam War by “disappearing” into Scotland for many years. A friend died in Vietnam, and I was deeply unnerved, depressed, and confused.

Borges helped to bring me back to myself, teaching me many important things about life, writing, and love.

The movie is coming out this year, starring Fionn Whitehead as me, Luis Gnecco (a truly great South American actor) as Borges, and Alan Cumming as Alastair Reid, my mentor and friend in Scotland.
