Atmospheric and moody this book came into my life at the perfect moment. One crisp spring morning I happened upon a couple of wild foxes playing in a neighbor’s yard. I was entranced. And for the next few weeks, I absorbed, inhaled, and was entranced by all things fox-related. Wandering in a local bookstore I found this book. It skipped the TBR pile. Luscious writing, and intriguing characters drive the narrative in this magical realism, literary work. Set in last century China, and incorporating Chinese mythology, a grieving fox/woman seeks to discover and punish the killer of her kit. Evil and goodness cross her path as she risks capture and obsession. I loved this book, and would recommend it, even to those without a fox-fascination.

I’ve grown to love the characters in this series. This book reveals the growth that occurs at every age when one is open to it. And grief, while more frequent as one ages, is no less painful. Last Devil to Die brought me to tears as well as laughter. It’s beautiful, brutal truth has stuck with me over these many months. It is a cozy mystery, with just a touch of dark reality. I adore this series, but I understand why Osman took a break after this one, to switch to a new series with different characters. I just hope he comes back to it. I will miss these old codgers.

This year’s guilty pleasure was Starter Villian. I loved the sci-fi/cozy mystery/spy thriller mash-up. It was laugh-out-loud funny. For the cozy mystery lovers be-warned…there is foul language. But the character that uses that foul language I will not divulge as much as I am tempted. Clever dialogue, and making the unbelieveable, believeable are the delights of this book. I hope there are more to come. I enjoyed these irreverent characters.
