Barbara Gregorich ❤️ loved this book because...

I loved this book because, by "rewriting" The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the POV of Jim, the author was showing us that the way white people look at the world is not the only way to look at it — is not even the right way to look at it. This book openly, honestly, and with great humor and compassion, showed us what enslaved black people thought and what they did.

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2024

'Truly extraordinary books are rare, and this is one of them' - Roddy Doyle, Booker Prize-winning author of Paddy Clarke, Ha Ha Ha

James by Percival Everett is a profound and ferociously funny meditation on identity, belonging and the sacrifices we make to protect the ones we love, which reimagines The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. From the author of The Trees, shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and Erasure, adapted into the Oscar-winning film American Fiction.

This book was awesome! It had characters I empathized with, a plot that kept me on the edge of my seat, seriousness, humor. And, most of all, friendship and courage.

What is this book about?

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through…

Book cover of The Gate to Women's Country

Barbara Gregorich ❤️ loved this book because...

What I liked most was the stunning, unanticipated-by-me revelation at the end. I had to sit there and rethink the whole book: all the little hints that I missed because I thought this was a book about survival after an apocalypse. Which it is. But it also takes the question of survival to a different level.

What is this book about?

THE GATE TO WOMEN'S COUNTRY tells of a society that exists three hundred years after our own has nearly destroyed itself. Now, male warriors are separated from women at an early age and live in garrisons plotting futilely for the battles which must never be fought again. Inside the women's towns, education, arts and science flourish. But for some like Stavia, there is more to see. Her sojourn with the man she is forbidden to love brings into sharp focus the contradictions that define their lives.

And when tragedy strikes, Stavia is faced with a decision she never thought she…

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Exit Velocity

Book cover of Exit Velocity

What is my book about?

Fast-paced action and conflict, friendship and family, a touch of humor, and an even greater touch of the extraordinary — a parrot from another planet. A parrot on a Duty-to-the-Universe mission.

Exit Velocity is a thought-provoking novel set in the heart of Bridgeport, Chicago's historic South Side working class area. There Rowan Pickett is desperate for a job. Rowan's world has gone to hell, her sister murdered in a high school shooting, her mother leaving, and Rowan sitting home and mourning.

But Rowan is determined to survive, and getting a job is the first step in that direction. In seeking the job, she unwittingly sends a signal to Deeply, the parrot. This simple action results in injury to Rowan's sworn enemy, neofascist Zeb Snoddy. In a series of twists and turns it raises the suspicions of podcaster Jake Terranova, who jumps to the conclusion that Rowan and the parrot are a political assassination team.

When Rowan does get a job, thanks to the help of long-time friend and political leader Titus Longshaw, she starts to rebuild her life while working at Package Nova, a global shipping firm. But Rowan has some surprises in store, not all of them good.

In this fast-paced, realistic, and heartening story of a woman fighting back against violence, Rowan's enemies meet resistance they never expected, and working class struggle is brought to life in exciting and powerful ways.
